What is Our Youth & Family Ministry Program?

Children and families are a treasured part of St. Gertrude Parish. We offer a number of programs that are focused on developing and nurturing a deep relationship with God, and encourage children to appreciate what it means to be part of a welcoming, loving community that cares for and respects people from all walks of life.

If you’d like to get involved or to learn more, contact Jim Potthast at the Rectory at 773.764.3621 or via email at jpotthast@stgertrudechicago.org.

Family Ministry

Faith is an individual, family, and communal experience. Family Ministry at St. Gertrude Parish seeks to build community among families, to strengthen parents as leaders of faith for and in their families, and to open opportunities for families to engage together in faith formation, mission and service, and fun. Through faith formation activities and service projects, families have the opportunity to build community and grow in faith together.

A schedule for the 2019-2020 school year will be available shortly.

Kids Word

Also known as Children's Liturgy of the Word, Kids Word takes place during the 10:30 am Mass on most Sunday mornings from September through May. Kids Word is a ministry for children in kindergarten through 4th grade that introduces stories and themes from the Bible in age-appropriate language. Accompanying activities, reflections, and discussions allow children to grow together in their understanding of Scripture and in their growing relationship with God.

Religious Education (CCD)

For children in grades 1-8 who attend public or non-Catholic private schools, the Religious Education program provides a faith community for children and their families as they awaken, nourish, and deepen their awareness of God's presence in all things. In class, students and teachers seek to deepen their relationship with God through prayer and reflection. They learn about being a disciple of Jesus and a part of a community of faith and they learn how their lives can contribute to the Reign of God through service and the fostering of peace and justice in the world.

Sacramental preparation is an integral part of the curriculum for second and seventh grade. Students must have completed two full consecutive years of formation before celebrating First Communion or the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The Religious Education program begins in September and concludes in May. Classes for the 2019-2020 school year will be held on Sunday mornings from 9:00-10:15 am.

Walk on Water (WOW) Youth Program

The primary goal of WOW is to offer opportunities for teens in 8th-12th grades to explore their questions, passions, interests, and doubts in relation to their faith. The WOW Youth Program finds its foundation in five pillars: community, leadership, service and mission, faith formation, and fun. Teens in this program explore the intersection of life and faith through questioning, reflection, and conversation; they work alongside one another in service to the Church and their community, and they develop bonds of friendship. The WOW youth program also organizes a summer mission trip in which teens spend a week in service, prayer, and reflection.

Registation forms should be emailed to Jim Potthast at jpotthast@stgertrudechicago.org

Teen Mission Trip

Thank you for supporting the youth group's service trip to Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota! With your generosity we were able to repair homes damaged from a severe hailstorm, connect with the native community, and learn about the Lakota Sioux culture. This experience has allowed us to grow in our faith and deepen our connection with the Holy Spirit.
