Who Should Receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick?

According to the Roman ritual, anyone among the faithful “whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age” not only may, but should, receive the sacrament. Some examples include:

  • A person who is considered in danger of death.
  • A person who has a serious disease or medical condition (e.g. cancer, heart disease, mental illness, diabetes). The sacrament may be repeated if the person’s condition becomes more serious.
  • A person preparing for surgery, if a serious illness is the reason for the surgery.
  • An elderly person if they have become notably weakened by age, even if there is no particular serious illness present.
  • A seriously sick child.
